Commercial Law/ Contract

Commercial solicitors usually find that there are many career routes open to them. Working in-house either as sole counsel or within a team can bring with it the opportunity to specialize or cover a more broad area of commercial law.  National commercial firms often offer a constant flow of challenging work often from blue chip clients and smaller commercial firms often have a very varied client base ranging from smaller companies to much larger companies.

During 2009 and early 2010 many private practice were seconding lawyers into In House roles with their clients – this worked for both parties with practices potentially reducing the number of redundancies they may otherwise have had to consider and with companies benefitting from having a cheaper resource at a time when finances were under scrutiny but there was still considerable work pressure on the In House teams.

Some of these seconded lawyers ultimately had the opportunity to remain within these roles on a permanent basis and this considerably impacted upon the number of Commercial In House opportunities that we acted upon by recruiters.  This has filtered through now and the previous status quo has returned with demand for Commercial Lawyers really picking up since 2010.

We are now seeing this increase in demand being replicated across practice as well with instructions across the full range of levels – Solicitor, Associate and Partner – particularly within national and strong mid tier firms for both general and more specific roles (in particular areas such as Information Technology and Competition Law).
