Family Law Jobs
The last year has been an interesting year when it comes to Family Law and the demand for Family Lawyers. After what seemed like a massively long period of very few roles coming through, the latter half of the year brought about an increase which has remained steady up to now. It has caught many by surprise, and has given a large number of candidates the confidence to kick-start their job search once again.
Although we appear to be coming out of the economic recession, the so-called “social recession” is still very much being felt by couples and families across the UK. The likelihood is that this will continue despite the improvement in the economic environment, as the effects still remain. In turn, this has kept demand for Family Lawyers constant. Legal aid cuts, which according to many sources went much further than expected, have also had a dramatic impact on the family market.
The roles we have instructed on have tended to be along a fairly similar vein, more often than not they have required candidates to hold at least 2 years experience within a family position. Time seems to have been an issue with many of our clients, and with a lot of roles requiring someone to start as soon as possible (obviously taking into account varying notice periods) there is a far greater expectation for candidates to “hit the ground running”. We have seen opportunities for both qualified Solicitors and Legal Executives predominantly, and from speaking with our clients this is likely to be the way things continue.
Family Lawyer vacancies have required technically strong applicants with, as one would imagine, excellent interpersonal and communication skills. Experience is vital, and with competition high this, along with your “softer” side (i.e. people skills) will really make you stand out. What is majorly apparent in the family market is that everyone knows everyone, as you would expect with the nature of the work. Gaining a good name for yourself and a solid reputation will almost certainly give you a foothold in the market and the opportunity to go wherever you want to go with your career in the future.
Family Lawyers are very client-focused and are constantly striving to achieve the best possible outcome for those who are often going through one of the most difficult periods of their lives. As a long-term career option it seems that there will always be areas of family law that are more thriving than others, and it’s a fantastic option for those who don’t necessarily want to shut themselves in a room and bury themselves in paperwork. Personality is key and this coupled with the right technical ability will certainly put you in good stead to build a fantastic career in this area of law.
