Intellectual Property and or Information Technology Law are highly specialised areas of law to work in, although the two have diverged in recent years, particularly in London. As businesses move more and more and of their work online or abroad, we are seeing an increased demand for lawyers with a background in outsourcing and data protection. Looking forwards, it seems that these too will diverge, with an increase in the number of pure outsourcing and pure data protection roles arising at law firms nationally.

Equally, within the Intellectual Property market, the smartphone patent wars have highlighted the increased demand for solicitors with science backgrounds and we are seeing many leading firms consistently on the look-out for solicitors with an electrical engineering degree. This demand hasn’t impacted at all on the need for those with a life sciences background, with many contentious patent practices also growing their pharmaceutical client bases year-on-year. For those with a background in soft IP it is worth highlighting that many of the boutique firms are flourishing, with major brands seeking to protect and exploit their IP rights turning to high quality boutiques practices who offer similar (and more personal) service with lower rates.

All told, demand for lawyers with a background in IT or IP is very strong and there is no sign of it dropping in the future.
