Fantastic Opportunity for a qualified European and Chartered Patent Attorney to join a truly global in-house business.
My client is a leading player in the Energy sector with a global presence and IP team which functions from all 4 corners of the globe. This team has members in the US but is headquartered out of the UK and London office so joining this team in this location places candidates at the heart of the IP operation. You will report into the Global Head of Patents for this stream of the business and someone who has been instrumental in the growth of the IP team both in London and the US.
Their IP team is structured in a way which mirrors the business overall and you will work within one of the three main business streams dealing with a range of work, largely comprising drafting and prosecution but with a chance to offer wider advice to all areas of the business as part of your overall remit. The team comprises Attorneys with strong experience, all of whom are qualified, thus the requirement for another qualified candidate to join the team.
There is also a lot of contact with Research and Development as you help formulate the IP strategy for this business. You will also work externally with other leading businesses in this field and thus, the ability to be an effective communicator externally and often remotely is fundamental.
Technically this role is diverse but with an emphasis on Chemical and Mechanical work. From a Chemical perspective, candidates with a largely inorganic Chemistry background will be of interest. Those who consider themselves to be ‘generalists’ will be relevant because although Chemistry is a large part of the caseload, it is also diverse enough to accommodate a wider skill-set for the right candidate. There is an existing caseload available for the candidate to take over and help to develop.
While this is a team with a relatively flat structure, as one tends to find with in-house positions, opportunities exist longer term for candidates to diversify into other business areas, lead projects and individuals to take on initiatives within the business to raise profile all within the global IP function.
Candidates will hold both a national and European Qualification as this is a role where the successful candidate must have the ability to work on a stand alone basis. A diverse technical background can be accommodated but the ability to handle at least some Chemistry work is important. This business has a diverse and challenging range of internal clients. Candidates must have the confidence to deal effectively with commercial and research professionals of all levels up to and including board level. Academically, Chemistry or Chemical Engineering would fit well into this team and candidates would have a minimum of an upper second class degree.
In additional to the formal qualifications and experience, this business is determined that it maintains it’s track record for recruiting confident, commercial, robust Attorneys with strong interpersonal skills who are capable of reporting into and liaising effectively with internal clients of all levels, regardless of their position within the business.
Salary and benefits will be commensurate with experience and skills gained to date.
