In-House Legal Jobs

Moving In-house has typically proven to be an extremely popular option for some Lawyers, especially those who have traditionally come from a non-contentious or company commercial background. Joining the busy legal department of an organisation is often seen as a way into business and commerce and a slight move away from black letter law. By definition, the work In-house is often seen as being more varied and less specialist, requiring the lawyer to be pragmatic and comfortable advising business on commercial matters, often outside their immediate area of legal expertise.

This can sometimes result in high pressure scenarios and Industry lawyers are often at pains to emphasise the fact that the absence of timesheets, targets and networking (commonplace in Practice) , does not automatically mean a less stressful working environment In-house. That said, it is a widely regarded that the caseload In-house is typically more predictable, allowing the lawyer a little more control over their diary. We can’t guarantee you’ll be working fewer hours, however you may feel you are able to more successfully organise your diary around your work!

Strong academics and a solid career pedigree will no doubt assist your application, however there is perhaps a greater emphasis upon culture fit In-house than in Practice , as your role is more of a support function as opposed to fee earning. You’ll also need strong communication skills as you might be expected to interact with non-legal people from those on a shop floor to board level. Once part of a company you will be acting to safe guard the business, train and educate your colleagues internally and carefully follow all changes in legislation and regulatory issues.
