The Cheshire Legal Market

The Cheshire legal market: what's happening as we head towards 2027?
There is plenty happening across the Cheshire legal market, but recruitment activity is becoming increasingly targeted. Over recent months, we've seen a mixture of expansion, acquisitions, senior appointments and investment in key practice areas across the region.
A few observations worth highlighting:
1. Consolidation and expansion
Regional firms are demonstrating investment in their teams and local presence. Acquisitions are also reshaping the local landscape, creating opportunities for firms to broaden their service offering and strengthen their position.
2. Property remains an interesting area
Commercial Property and Residential Property continue to be important areas for regional firms. Firms are looking to strengthen their transactional teams and those seeking solicitors who can offer broader property experience rather than a narrowly defined specialism.
3. Private Client continues to attract attention
Experienced Private Client solicitors remain valuable to firms looking to strengthen established departments. STEP qualifications, experience managing complex estates and the ability to develop client relationships are all important differentiators.
4. Employment, Corporate and Litigation
We're also seeing continued interest in specialist expertise across these areas, particularly where firms are looking to develop existing teams or bring in more senior experience.
5. The NQ market remains challenging
One area I think deserves more attention is the NQ market. While there are opportunities, they are considerably more limited than at experienced solicitor level. NQs qualifying in 2027 would be wise to start conversations early rather than waiting until qualification.
My overall impression?
Cheshire isn't short of ambition. Firms are investing, teams are evolving and the regional market continues to offer an interesting alternative to the larger city-centre practices. However, recruitment isn't necessarily about simply filling vacancies. It's about identifying where firms want to grow, what expertise they need and finding the right people to help them get there.
I'd be interested to hear from other legal professionals:
Are you seeing increased investment and recruitment across Cheshire, or are firms still being cautious about headcount going into 2027?
