In House Counsel - Litigation

Are you a litigation solicitor looking to make the move in-house? Opportunities of this calibre are genuinely few and far between.

We're working on a rare opportunity for an experienced disputes lawyer to join a well-established national business with a significant UK presence. Based in Newcastle upon Tyne with a highly flexible hybrid working arrangement, this role offers the chance to step away from billable hours and into a commercially focused position where you'll have real influence, autonomy and variety.

About the Company

Our client is a leading UK organisation with a nationwide footprint and a strong reputation within its sector. With a substantial and diverse operation, the business manages a broad range of legal matters and has invested heavily in building a high-performing in-house legal team.

The legal function is highly regarded internally and plays a key role in supporting strategic decision-making across the organisation. You'll be joining a collaborative and supportive team environment where legal professionals are trusted advisors to the wider business and encouraged to contribute beyond the traditional confines of legal practice.

About the Role

You'll take ownership of a range of contentious matters, from lower-value claims through to complex litigation, while working closely with stakeholders across the business.

The role will involve:

  • Managing a diverse caseload of civil and commercial disputes
  • Advising on contentious consumer, commercial, property, and regulatory matters, to name a few
  • Working alongside external legal advisers and overseeing panel relationships where appropriate
  • Acting as a trusted legal advisor to operational teams and senior stakeholders
  • Supporting the development of dispute resolution strategies and internal processes
  • Contributing to reporting, performance monitoring and continuous improvement initiatives
  • Mentoring junior legal team members and helping to develop best practice across the function

This position offers a rare combination of high-quality litigation work, genuine business engagement and a strong work-life balance.

The Ideal Candidate

We're keen to speak with qualified solicitors, barristers or legal executives with strong contentious experience gained either in private practice or an existing in-house environment.

You'll ideally have:

  • At least 5 years' PQE in litigation or disputes work
  • Experience handling a varied civil or commercial disputes caseload
  • Strong organisational skills and the ability to manage competing priorities
  • A pragmatic and commercially focused approach to problem solving
  • Excellent stakeholder management and communication skills
  • Experience working with external counsel and managing legal spend (desirable)
  • An interest in process improvement and developing more efficient ways of working

Most importantly, you'll be someone who enjoys variety, wants to become more closely involved with the commercial side of a business, and is excited by the prospect of a long-term in-house career.
