With the start of the new financial year, I suspect a few will look back on the past 12 months with any degree of nostalgia. That said, for all the understandable anxieties relating to the job security in legal profession (especially in the In-House sector and not excluding those of us in recruitment) we have seen a period of extraordinary activity, unlike anything I have witnessed in 20 years of working exclusively on the industry desk for Sacco Mann.

In this time, we have seen many market trends, with businesses and law firms coming and going in various upturns and downturns, but I cannot recall such a surge in activity across such a variety of sectors with companies seeking Lawyers with such diverse range of skills.

In the final six months of the last financial year, we have worked with companies looking to recruit and expand their legal teams in the sectors you would naturally anticipate such as IT, retail, energy, food manufacture, and financial services but also some that might surprise including travel and tourism, construction, and property development.

We have also seen an untypically high demand for Lawyers with a background in employment, property, construction, as well as placing candidates with more niche experience such as IP and biotech/diagnostics expertise.

We currently have a range of more generalist commercial roles we are seeing to fill. The In-House market was ticking over nicely before the pandemic hit and there appears to be strong evidence that the effects of the last 12 months has only momentarily tapered the appetite from businesses to recruit their own In-House lawyers.

If you are interested in discussing what opportunities we have available or would simply like to have an informal and confidential discussion regarding the market, prospects then please get in touch with Steve Shakespeare on 0113 245 3338.
